Description

NGC 6744 (Caldwell 101) is a large spiral galaxy in the constellation Pavo (the Peacock) and one of the 'close' Southern Hemisphere galaxies. Despite its distance of 30 mly and its magnitude of 8.25, its low surface brightness makes it difficult to observe and to photograph, with its feathery arms particularly dim behind a crowded star field in Pavo.  On the lower right is the small, irregular companion galaxy, NGC 6744A.  This image was a test for the C8 and to see how much of the galaxy could be revealed.
